Police have cornered a gunman at a Navy Yard in Washington DC after he shot at least 12 people, killing four. Reports are now emerging that there are at least two shooters involved.
One of the men was seen carrying a handgun and a long gun, either a shotgun or an assault rifle.
The shooting began at 8:20am EST, according to the U.S. Navy’s official Twitter account.
It is worth noting that Washington Naval Yard is a gun free zone (victim disarmament zone), meaning only criminals like the shooter in this incident are able to carry arms. Workers in the building have been told to “shelter in place.”
“We urge citizens to listen to the authorities and follow directions from the first responders on site,” said the White House in a statement.
All departures out of Reagan National Airport have been grounded as a result of the incident.
“An active shooter was reported inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building (Bldg. 197) on the Washington Navy Yard at 8:20 a.m. (Eastern Time),” states a press release.
Two police officers are amongst the victims.
