The American Institute of Stress (AIS) estimates that between 75 to 90% of primary care physician visits are due to stress related complaints. Whether its work, family, friends, or just life in general, stress seems to be a part of everything. Your body is naturally wired to handle stress. The evolutionary mechanism of “fight or flight” is a wonderfully complex system that protects and prepares oneself from the unavoidable stresses of the world. Back in the “day”, it was saving yourself from the lions and tigers of the wild, that’s now shifted to the “lions” and “tigers” that live in the city! Each day we face a multitude of demands, such as taking on greater workloads at home and at the office, taking care of friends and family, and dealing with all of life’s unexpected events. Although these stresses seem more like hassles and you wouldn’t think they would have such a destructive effect, research shows that’s not the case at all.
